Here one of our favorite authors, Natalie Babbitt, is setting the scene for her beloved young adult novel Tuck Everlasting: “The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too,... Read The Rest →
There are so many excellent things about London. The very available, tactile history of the city itself, the volume of incredible galleries and art, the vintage shops, Kate Middleton. However, my absolute favorite part of being in London is the prolific use of pattern (specifically wallpaper!) that exists in nearly every corner of the city. Being half English seems to have its advantages – at least when traveling with my British dad – we skip the line at customs thanks to his passport, I totally get it when somebody says... Midwestern-based Krista Nye Schwartz, one of the brains behind the beautiful textile blog and interior design firm CLOTH & KIND, has had a rich history with pattern. She’s spent time in both India and Brazil, and worked at Condé Nast for a number of years for the magazines Glamour and Vanity Fair. Below she’s graciously shared with us her personal inspirations, her favorite places to go in New York, and what she would be if she were a wallpaper. What wallpaper pattern did you choose, and why? Eyelets, because I absolutely love the... Read The Rest →
It’s summer and we’re really into bright blue skies, swimming pools and some BBQ. We’re also really into giving away this custom colorway of “Folded.” However, it’s only one roll. If you happen to have a small space in your house that you’d love covered in pattern, please comment and let us know where you’d use it! We’ll randomly select a winner on Friday morning, June 27th. Though, obviously, if you suggest a space that isn’t small, we can’t really promise the roll will properly cover the area. Capisce?
Yesterday, we visited the studio of the infamous Tony Baratta. No, not the New York mobster, but the interior designer known for balancing bright colors, patterns and a modern aesthetic. Tony has two books about his practice, “Diamond Baratta Design,” and “All American,” both of which celebrate his achievements as one-half of Diamond Barrata Design, before his partner, William Diamond, retired in 2012. “To be a designer, after all of these years, I realize that the one thing you cannot do is get stuck in the same head,” says Baratta. “You... Envelopes signify so many things: special invitations, secret letters, important documents, *cough* bills *cough*. And while we could send our check to ConEdison in a nice handmade envelope made from our Geodes – Pyrite paper, we’ll just fashion some adorably small envelopes for an upcoming secret event fun. This paper craft is remarkably simple. You’ll need a pair of scissors, an envelope, a pencil, the paper you’d like to use, and some paper glue (we recommend Talas’s Jade paste). Start by taking apart an envelope you have already. This will... Read The Rest →
